SPEED CAMERAS & SIGNS - WHAT ARE YOUR VIEWS? (09/12/04)

Recently there has been much media comment concerning speed cameras and speed restriction signs and their effectiveness in reducing road accident rates. Headlines such as "New review of speed cameras as crash rates fail to fall", "Speed is not the main road killer", "Another money-making wheeze masquerading as traffic policy", are just a few recently aired in the national press.

Somerset newspapers too have had their fair share of readers letters and editorial questioning the need for, or indeed the effectiveness of, the proliferation of camera signs, road markings and speed restrictions notices throughout the county. I would now like to know the general public's view on this issue. We collect large amounts of factual data at County Hall, but not the public's perception. Are these restrictions perceived as more "nanny state-ism" and causing dangerous frustration to the driver? Or as a genuine aid to reduction of accidents on our roads?

I would find any comments or personal experiences helpful in advising on future changes in policy the County might undertake. Please write to me at County Hall, Taunton, TA1 4DY
