CONSERVATIVE PLEDGE TO BOOST ROAD FUNDING REALISED (07/02/02)
CONSERVATIVE determination has paid off and now finally the dire situation with regards to Somerset’s roads is being addressed.
As part of the County Council’s proposed budget, an extra £3.9 million has been agreed for the Highways Department. This is as a direct result of Conservative advice and recommendation.
Conservative leader, John Smeaton said, ‘we are delighted that the Liberal Democrats have finally listened to our reasoning and recognised the need for additional provision for our Highways Department. We have fought hard to secure this funding and are delighted that it has seen fruition.’
Conservative spokesman for Environment and Transport, Mike Facey commented, ‘‘Liberal Democrats have continually underfunded our roads and the Highways Department have done well under growing pressure. However, this has been little consolation for the people of Somerset.
‘Now, at last, proactive operations can begin and the safety of our roads made a priority. With this additional money, rather than mere maintenance, focus can be placed on actual improvement. It is a pleasure to see the Liberal Democrats at County Hall finally taking notice of Conservative common sense.’
