AXE THE TAX CAMPAIGN IS A JOKE - Letter (20/01/05)
Dear Sir,
The Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Glastonbury wants me to persuade my party to back the Axe the Tax campaign*. He must be joking!
Why support a campaign which would mean that a typical two-earner couple would have to pay an extra £630 per year compared with the average Council Tax?
Why support a campaign which has been shown to be no more than a headline. As the Minister for Local & Regional Government said in Parliament on 12th January, when answering a question from a Lib Dem MP about evidence submitted on alternatives to the Council Tax,
“…. the evidence makes it clear that his party’s proposal for a local income tax is a mistake and that it would be impractical and not in the long-term interests of the country.”
Pretty damning, I would say.
Axe the Tax? No. Axe the Liberal Democrats in Somerset? Yes.
Yours sincerely,
Robert Little
Conservative County Councillor
County Hall
Taunton
