Nuclear Power Ignored
Nuclear power is out of the frame for Somerset.
This was the conclusion from the meeting of Somerset County Council on Wednesday. The Liberal Democrats presented their long awaited 'Responding to Climate Change' paper and nuclear power was not even mentioned. When the Conservatives raised the issue the LibDem spokesman, Alvin Horsfall, said: "We have a policy of nuclear non-proliferation - that is why it is not in there."
Conservatives think that nuclear power can have a part to play in supplying our future energy needs. And that will almost certainly mean further power generation at Hinkley Point.
The Leader of the Conservative group, Ken Maddock said: "It has to be safe of course and we need we make certain that the local community gets the maximum possible benefit from any development relating to nuclear power. But simply to put your head in the sand in this way is grossly irresponsible. We need to get on with this. As existing fuels run out, so the lights will go out all over Somerset. We must avoid this, and the time to act is now."
