Conservatives Win By-Election
Conservatives have been celebrating victory in the Somerset County Council By-Election held in Mendip North East on May 1st.
Matthew Ellis, a 25 year old local businessman, was elected to serve on the Council with a majority of 71 votes over the Lib Dem candidate in the two party contest.
The campaign concentrated on local issues including the impact of heavy traffic in villages and improving small local schools in order to prevent closure.
The victory reflects Conservative election successes throughout the country and the Conservative Group at County Hall are confident of gaining further seats in the Council elections next May (2009) and taking control of the Council from the Lib Dems.
