FOOTPATH SCHEME SCRUTINISED

Last week the Environment Scrutiny Sub-Committee of Somerset County Council met to examine the Parish Path Liaison Officer scheme. The scheme involves volunteers checking the rights of way in their parishes. The volunteers also carry out minor maintenance and report major obstructions.

Problems with the scheme had been identified by former Conservative group leader Brigadier Christopher Wolverson after the resignation of a PPLO in his Lydeard division. The committee chairman , Watchet and Quantock Conservative councillor Anthony Trollope-Bellew , had asked that all PPLOs be invited to the meeting.

Over a dozen PPLOs attended and a full and frank discussion ensued. Problems with communication and reaction time to major obstructions were identified. Following a meeting between officers and PPLOs in the New Year, a further more detailed report will be brought to the committee probably to the meeting on 7 April 2009.

Anthony Trollope-Bellew said " I was delighted that as many PPLOs attended and look forward to more contributing when we look at the scheme again. This is a good scheme but I wish it to become an excellent one."
