LIB DEMS IGNORING NUCLEAR

Lib Dems at Somerset County Council have been accused of jeopardising the creation of almost 2,500 jobs in Somerset.

EDF Energy announced this week that it would nominate land at Hinkley Point for a new nuclear power station, which would create around 350 permanent jobs, and over 2,000 temporary jobs.

However, this much needed boost to the Somerset economy is in jeopardy because the Lib Dems at Somerset County Council care more about political dogma than the future of Somerset.

John Edney, Conservative Councillor for Cannington and Conservative Group Spokesman on Economic Development, commented on EDF Energy's proposals and the lack of a Lib Dem response. He said, "National Lib Dem policy is non-nuclear, which is why we hear nothing from the Lib Dems at Somerset. The Lib Dems at County Hall are hoping that if they put their head in the sand for long enough, this issue will go away, but the future of Somerset's energy and economy is much too important to ignore.''

Anthony Trollope-Bellew, County Councillor for Watchet and Quantocks, added, "It is vital that we explore and exploit all methods of energy production based on a sound analysis of the costs and benefits. This will include ensuring that it is safe, environmentally-friendly, and brings benefits to the local economy. If we can get these guarantees, Conservatives will support the expansion of nuclear power generation at Hinkley Point as part of a balanced energy strategy. It will help to ensure our energy supplies for generations to come. It will also provide 350 permanent jobs locally, as well as thousands during the construction phase.''

Councillor Edney concluded, "The Conservatives in Somerset are proud to pledge their support to this scheme, and I call on the Lib Dems to make their views known. This issue is vital to Somerset's future.''
