LIB DEM EMPTY PROMISES TO MAKES ROADS SAFE (16/04/02)

Conservative County Councillors criticise Lib Dem empty promises regarding road improvements.

In a recent press statement, Tim Carroll, Liberal Democrat Transport spokesman, announced his plans for ‘remodelling’ the main transport strategies.

The Conservative Group at County Hall agree that a Roads Review rethink is needed. However, they disagree wholeheartedly with the empty promises expressed.

A lot more than £30,000 is needed for the Wells to Cheddar Relief Road, the Martock Relief Road, the Cheddar Southern Relief Road and the West Coker Bypass. How safe can these roads be made with such a small amount?

Conservative spokesperson for Transport, Mike Facey, commented, ‘Our communities have been promised safer roads year on year by the Liberal Democrats. Their empty promises have resulted in disappointment and confusion.

‘Why should we believe that they are any closer to achieving improvements? Their track record speaks for itself.

‘It is all very well for Tim Carroll to say that a route “may qualify for a local safety scheme” but what does this mean in real terms?

‘Conservatives have fought long and hard to achieve greater investment in roads. We secured an extra £3.6 million for our roads. It seems that the Liberal Democrats are too incompetent to use that money wisely.’
