Tories Demand Rethink on Speed Signs (11/04/03)
At Somerset County Council's meeting on 9 April, Conservatives demanded a review of the current policy of erecting seemingly random speed limit signs all over the County. They spoilthe countryside. They confuse the driver with the ever changing speed limit and no doubt will be ignored by most, who will continue to drive at a speed which is safe in the circumstances. The Conservatives doubt the cost effectiveness of the campaign.' I welcome the decision to re-examine the policy - its cost, its effectiveness and the police's ability to enforce the limits,' said Denis Underhill, the Conservative Group'sspokesman on Highways. 'It is important that as many members of the public as possible attend the Scrutiny Committee meeting at 10am on 19 June at County Hall to express their concerns'.
