LETTER - Demanding referendum on European Constitution

Dear Sir,

I am delighted that at last there is some debate as to whether or not it is in Britain's interests to sign up to a European Constitution.

In July, Somerset County Council passed a Conservative-initiated motion, asking the Prime Minister to allow the people to vote on this important decision.

Number 10 has told us that as the Constitution is merely a 'tidying up exercise', there is no need for a referendum. However, it will introduce many new powers to Europe. Some of the most worrying proposals for establishing this new State include:

1. European law to become superior to the law of individual countries.

2. Standard criminal justice rules, and provision for a European Public Prosecutor.

3. A full-time European President and Foreign Minister.

4. Abolition of National vetoes on important decisions.

These are just some of the alarming changes that could be made. It is a complicated issue. We must have all the facts. And we must be allowed a say in a decision that will have such huge implications for our country.

Cllr Christopher Wolverson

Leader of the Conservative Group
