LETTER - Speed Policy Confusion (03/11/03)

Let me assure your readers that there are some elected members of the County Council, who have listened to their concerns about the implementation of the current speed policy. As a result of pressure we have brought to bear, the policy is at this very moment being reviewed. That over 2,000 responded during the public consultation is some indication of the level of disquiet.

Of course, we all wish to reduce the number of accidents, injuries and deaths on our roads. However speed is not the sole cause of crashes; it is more often a case of bad driving. The proliferation of speed signs and cameras, the distracting changing speed limits, the imposition of a 20 mph speed limit outside all schools for 24/7/52 and the inflexible imposition of schemes in conservation areas are not the solution, and in some cases compound the dangers. Our way of life depends on people obeying the law - but they will only do so if they consider that the regulations are right and sensible. I am very disturbed that the enforcers - the police - do not seem to have been closely involved in this policy as it has been developed.

I trust that when the Commission reports in December, there will be recognition that the present implementation is flawed. What we need is a strategy which takes proper account of the impact on all - residents, private car and commercial drivers alike. It needs to be a realistic policy, which can be understood and supported by all, and where appropriate enforced.

Yours faithfully,

Christopher Wolverson
